The responses Kurt received from Andrew when he called him up after getting no reply on Facebook were flat and numb. He knew immediately from the tone of Andrew's voice that something was really wrong. He got the bare basics out of him, and as soon as he heard that, he promised Andrew he would be right there and hung up before Andrew could protest. Maybe they were exes, but so fucking what? Something like this, Andrew shouldn't be alone for. He needed his friends, and Kurt was going to be right there with him through it.

He found Andrew sitting on the side of one of the bed in the clinic. He looked terrible, and he was holding a tiny plastic cup in his hand containing three pills in one hand, and a cup of water in the other. With a concerned sigh, Kurt stepped into the small bay and pulled the curtain around behind him so they at least had a little bit of privacy. Fucking hell. Andrew was a staff member here and they couldn't even pull the curtain for him. Kurt went over to him, standing beside him so he could tuck an arm around Andrew's shoulders. "Worried about the side effects, darling?" he asked softly. He knew the post-exposure prophylatic drugs were really rough and the side effects often really bad. It was a hard notion to face that you could spend so long feeling crap, but it was the best precation out there.

Andrew had been on-call all of 42 minutes before he was actually called onto the floor. A bus crash meant there was a sudden overload of patients, to the point they were taking the less urgent cases to another hospital a bit further away. He literally hit the floor running and hadn't stopped now in nearing twelve hours. It was case after case, on top of even the bus casualities, plus three DOA's which meant a hell load of paperwork and getting the police involved. Andrew just should have known it would be a fucker of a shift, but he was nothing if not optimistic.

As if his personal life wasn't bugging him enough. First there was the fight-that-wasn't with Sam. All Andrew wanted to do was make sure he was okay and didn't need help, and then suddenly the whole issue of their arrangement was dragged open, when Andrew didn't even realise it was an issue before. Sam was suddenly making a huge deal over the boundaries and what they should or shouldn't be doing, and Andrew was basically just downright confused about the damn thing. Wasn't the whole point of friends with benefits just that? You were friends, who had sex. But friends still cared about each other, right? Though, friends who sleep together apparently aren't supposed to care about each other at all and now Andrew wasn't even sure if Sam was indicating they should stop sleeping together... stop being friends... None of it got resolved when Sam starting throwing up and asked Andrew to leave. All Andrew could do was respect that, and they hadn't spoken since. And then there was Kurt's Facebook status about having a date and the subsequent conversation that followed it. It shouldn't bother him, but it did. He still had some processing to do, even if Kurt seemed adamant no date was going to happen, there still had been an agreement to one, meaning there was mutual feelings on both sides. But at least Blaine was getting better. That was the upside, right?

It was a matter of shoving it all right to the back of his mind now, though, and focusing on the tasks at hand... )

Why does my head always hurt at the beginning of an on-call shift?

Please God, let this not be another 30 hour plus one. I'll be good. I won't even, I don't know, laugh at God jokes anymore.

Super-toxic, super resistent E.coli outbreak in Germany and Europe. Fantastic.

Can we send all recently arrived Europeans to another hospital? I mean that with the utmost respect. But who wants untreatable explosive diarrhea, seriously? Or the hospital in another pandemic lockdown?

Sums up my week nicely.

Andrew didn't actually stop to think much on the situation, which was probably a bad idea in hindsight. With Sam, he didn't let himself stop to overthink anything. He just did, and they kept rolling with this arrangement they had. As far as he was concerned, it was the perfect situation.

Though, now he found himself standing in the middle of Sam's apartment and just looking at Sam in total disbelief after blatantly being asked why he was there. "What... why am I here?" he asked with a small laugh of confusion. "I'm here to see if you're okay. You should you would let me know how you were, and you didn't. I was worried, I finished my shift and thought I would check how you were doing. What's going on?"

It was around six or so hours, give or take, after Andrew's text message that Kurt arrived back at the hospital. He sent through a text when he managed to find a place to park in the lot and then just sat in his car with his head resting on the steering wheel for a good long few minutes. He was tired, and the events of the past few days were catching up with him. His hands were wrapped around the steering wheel with his forehead resting against his wrist as he worked up the energy to get out of the car and go back into the hospital to check how Blaine was progressing.

He just made a really stupid error, the second in as many days. He honestly thought it was the right thing to do, but apparently not. With a shake of his head, he forced his feet to take him out of the car and back into the large, looming hospital building. Riding up in the elevator, he slumped against the wall, dropping his head back against it as he watched the lights illuminate in the floor numbers as he ascended. What the hell was he doing? Why was this all making him so crazy and reckless? He had his reckless days when he was younger, and had grown out of them long ago. Why the hell did this doctor have to make his mind malfunction? It was stupid. It couldn't happen, right?

He was dressed down in a pair of designer jeans and a long leather jacket with silver trimmings and a black fedora adorning his head. It was dressed down for him, anyway. It was getting late and beyond visiting hours for the HDU, so he made his way into the unit quietly and found Andrew waiting at the nurses station for him with the promised coffee. "How is he?" he asked, as he gratefully took the cup and put it to his lips for a long sip. He really need the caffeine buzz to hit, and sooner rather than later.

Sam's apartment was relatively close to the hospital. Walking distance, even, and normally he would just walk home. But he knew Andrew drove to work and once his text messages came about being so exhausted he wasn't feeling well, Sam was relieved he actually called upon him. He had found Andrew in the doctors' lounge slumped over on a table dozing in the crook of his elbow, so Sam peeled him up and got his keys off him so they could drive to his apartment.

Now he was unlocking his front door and Andrew was leaning on him with his head resting on Sam's shoulder and with a smirk and a small snort of a laugh, Sam tucked his arm around Andrew's shoulders and led him inside his apartment. "You look like shit," he stated succinctly. "I have no idea how you survive those ridiculous hours."

It took Artie a few minutes to figure out where he was when he woke up. He knew where he should be - shopping with his mother at the mall. But he was pretty certain that this was nowhere in the mall. No jostling shoppers getting in his way. Just noise outside of where he was, but more ordered than it should be, and more subdued.

He looked around, instantly realising that his glasses were missing. However, even without them, it all clicked - he could tell that he was on some kind of bed, in what was very obviously a hospital. He fought back an wave of panic. In a hospital was good, right? Whatever happened, he was alive and safe, and it could be fixed. "Breath, Abrams," he murmured to himself.

Andrew didn't ask many questions of Kurt via text message. In general, he never usually asked a lot of questions if his friends needed help. He usually acted, and then asked later. It was just very rare that his friends actually asked for his help on the job, and now Kurt was bringing a staff member down to the ER that he only wanted Andrew to attend to? Andrew wasn't even going to begin to analyse that without more information.

And he soon had it. It was a little over five minutes when Kurt arrived, hurrying along beside the gurney with said patient bing pushed by a couple of surgical nurses. He just got the shock of his life when he saw who the patient actually was, and more than looking worse for wear, too. It was on the tip of Andrew's tongue to swear in surprise, but he just frowned and directed the nurses to take Blaine into the examination bay around the corner. He came over to Kurt, holding his hands up, and only noticed then that Kurt had vomit on his scrubs pants. Sure, it looked like a quick towel clean up had happened, but it was hardly adequate and Andrew winced a little. "What the hell? Did you bitchslap him or something? Must have been some hellish g-force if you caused him to puke."

After actually scoring a sleep day off shift, Andrew found himself once again back at work. Luckily the ER was somewhat subdued that morning, touch wood, but it was still constant. He was hoping to catch up with Kurt when he could to get an update on Jackson Fraser. In fact, there were a couple of patients he wanted to follow up on to see how they were doing after he transferred them from his care.

But now, lunch, and although he had desperately wanted to grab a large plate of fries and a chocolate shake, he settled on a couple of salad sandwiches and a fruit juice because he honestly didn't know what time tonight he would get home. They were down a doctor for the nightshift and after spending all morning trying to ring around for a replacement, it looked like Andrew might have to end up doing another double to cover it. Fries and a shake weren't going to get him through the long hours.

He flipped open the latest medical journal he had just plucked out of his pigeon hole in the staff roof, but after looking over the cover, he wasn't sure there would be much in this month's edition to interest him. He poked a piece of lettuce back in between the bread before taking his first bite and almost moaned in pleasure. He hadn't realised quite how hungry he had managed to get that morning. He was enjoying the sunshine outside, though. He had always been the sort to escape outside on a break if he could for some fresh air and weather permitting. It was just awesome that today seemed to be one of those days that indicated how close summer really was and it was nice to get out of the ER for awhile.

Andrew left the psuedo-Discovery Channel moment in Resus #4 (aka Dr Anderson's first encounter wih One Kurt Hummel) as they discussed the Jackson Fraser situation and could finally get away to speak to his other patient, the battery victim, Quinn Fabray. It had been one hell of a long night and he was daydreaming about crawling into his bed and sleeping for a week. The shift just keep going on and on and on, though.

With a small smile, Andrew knocked on the door of the tiny ER room Miss Fabray was occupying. "Hey," he greeted her. "Apologies for the wait. We had a couple of serious emergencies land in my lap. I seem to be in demand tonight."

Andrew latest patient was an enigma. Andrew didn't like enigmas when he was functioning on very little sleep. If he wanted enigmas, he would harbour yearnings to be the next House, M.D. But at just after eight pm that night, one Jackson Fraser showed up on the gurney in Resus #4, unconscious, shirt covered in his own vomit, broken wrist, and a nasty looking bruise up the side of his face. He was brought in from a wedding reception across town, and according to a witness, he took a really nasty tumble in the carpark. Drunk or high... probably both.

Only not.

Jackson's blood alcohol levels were clear, and his tox screens were all negative. Andrew had just stood there at the nurses' station dumbfounded when the first round of bloods came back clear. Maybe it was overkill, but Andrew asked his nurse, Rachel Berry, to re-run the work up and when the second round came back just as clear, Andrew started to think something more sinister might be going on. Said witnesses reported Jackson acting weirdly at the wedding party, and then seeming to be drunk in the car park right before he threw up and fell in the gutter near his car. The fact he even had his car could prove to Andrew he had no intention of drinking... not that Andrew was one to make those assumption, from personal experience.

CT had to be the next stop, and while the poor guy remained unconscious through the whole ordeal the tests were run and at least this time Andrew got some answers... )
