Who? Artie and Puck
Where? Artie's hospital room, HDU
When? Thursday afternoon
What? Puck goes to speak to a patient he thinks he recognizes
Rating: PG-13, though Puck's mouth might be enough to bump it, depending on where it goes...

Puck's shift was just starting when they'd gotten a call for a guy who'd burned himself trying to light a charcoal grill. With gasoline. Sometimes, people really were ridiculously stupid. The guy was in the burn center, now, and Puck had just finished up all the piles of paperwork required for something like that.

After what seemed like mountains of paperwork, Puck needed a quick break, and was on his way to the vending machine when he remembered a patient he'd dropped off several days ago.

He remembered looking at the guy and thinking he looked really familiar, but he hadn't been the one to take his information, so he wasn't 100% sure if it was him or just looked like him.

It was that question that had him charging off toward the HDU at a brisk pace. He had to know. He talked to the on duty nurse, and flirted his way into finding out the room number with a whispered promise to call her, before heading into the room, quietly... careful not to wake the man if he should happen to be asleep.

Today was Kurt's first day back at work after the whole Swine Flu that wasn't ordeal. Infection Control had demanded he stay off until his next set of bloodwork came back clear, even if he hadn't had a single symptom from the start. Sure, he gave Blaine mouth-to-mouth, but malaria wasn't catching by saliva, and it wasn't like Kurt blew his penis. Talk about overkill.

But now he was back in his element and after being in the OR all morning, he had a couple of potential patients on the wards to see and assess. The first was SPI patient, Arthur Abrams, in the HDU just a couple of doors down from Blaine. Kurt was the uttmost professional when it came to his job, though, and whilst some staff might be tempted to drop in on a friend for a quick hello before seeing to their patients, Kurt wasn't one of them.

Back in his comfort zone of his his pink scrubs with matching stethoscope draped around his neck, Kurt picked up Artie's files form the nurses' station and went over to his room. He knocked softly on the glass door and went inside. "Mr Abrams? I'm Kurt Hummel, the Surgical and Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner here. Which is basically a fancy way of saying I'm a paid multi-tasker, but long story short, I'm going to be your Anesthesiologist if it comes to the decision to operate on your spine. Unlike the movies, it's not as simple as just giving you a needle and putting you to sleep, so I just need to have a bit of a chat with you, if that's okay."

The latest CT scan of Blaine's brain showed that over the past couple of days, the swellinghad reduced signficantly and the neurologist became confident that he should show signs of waking soon. All sedatives were ceased and they put a step up on his antimalaria drug regime now they were more confident he could cope with them. As the days seemed to drag on with Blaine not waking up, Kurt had been forced to go home to his apartment to try and get a bit of sleep, but he was back at the hospital early each morning to sit and wait for any changes.

And now something was finally looking up. Over the last hour or two, Blaine had been stirring and showing signs of waking. Any medical professional will tell you that in real life, it wasn't like the movies. Someone in Blaine's condition could actually take sometime to regain proper consciousness rather than just bouncing awake and ready to conversations. It was a process, and Kurt was willing to wait it out. As soon as it looked like it might happen, he had dimmed the lights right down so they wouldn't be a strain on Blaine's eyes and he made sure the doctors and nurses were aware in case - god forbid - he took a turn for the worse. But his obs were all stable had dropped out of the dangerous zone. All Kurt could do was just be patient.

He took the time to really study Blaine closely for the first time, despite having been there on and off for days. He was actually stunningly beautiful, as far as Kurt was concerned. His dark features, his curly hair... and he had the longest eyelashes Kurt was sure he had ever seen. Sure, he had a sickly pallor and dark smudges under his eyes. He had tubes up his nose for oxygen and wires feeding out of the top of his gown to monitor any changes in his heart. But he was still beautiful. Kurt had no idea what was going to happen from then on with this situation, and he didn't have time to analyse it, because Blaine started to wake up then. Kurt just rested his hand over Blaine's forehead to comfort him and once his eyes were open, he just smiled. "Hello, Sleeping Beauty. And right before I was about to plant one on you, too. Totally stealing my moment there. Psht, princesses..." he scoffed softly in jest, but he watched in concern to make sure Blaine was okay.

Artie had things to do while just lying there, but right now he preferred to lie and wonder what would happen if things were different. It was a dangerous path to go down, but one he would do a lot. If he hadn't looked at his phone, he'd have reacted quicker, avoided the crash. He couldn't really argue with that one, even if there he'd discovered the HDU had a very cute Asian nurse here. If he hadn't had the argument with Molly in the first place, he wouldn't be in Ohio. But then he'd have missed out on the last few weeks of really getting to know Rory.

He forced himself to stop thinking like that. It wasn't doing him any good. He reached out, picking up his Blackberry, intending to send off a quick email to his agent. Tom had been as supportive as he could be, but you could sense his disappointment at his loss of earnings as Artie wasn't being able to take up the offer that had been made. Deals like that came along rarely, but today Artie found himself less worried about it than he had. It wasn't as if he could do anything, stuck in this damn bed anyway.

Another day, another shift. Tina was a little cranky, though she knew it wasn't right of her to feel so. The High Dependency Unit was short-staffed and she'd been temporarily loaned from Rehab to help them out. She knew it was the right thing to do, and that she was still helping people, but she missed the familiarity of her usual patients and chatting with them about their progress. Still, she had a job to do. She flipped her hair over her shoulder and pulled it back into a ponytail, the blue and purple streaks at the ends of her hair barely visible. She had to look professional, after all.

It was still early in the shift as she made her way to the patient's room. She hummed an old Beatles song to herself softly as she approached, peering in first to see if he was awake.

The only thing keeping Nick from absolutely losing it was his son. Knowing he had to think about Rory was what was stopping him from breaking down completely knowing that three people who meant a lot to him were in the hospital and seriously sick or injured. News of Lauren had come first, and then Nick was told Blaine was sick, but no one knew with what. After that was the shitty news that Artie had been in a car accident and might be paralysed. Then more news that Blaine had swelling on the brain caused my malaria he contracted in Africa. There wasn't anymore Nick could take and he just needed to try and keep his head above water, or he would drown in it all.

Today was one of his days off and he knew he had to be at the hospital anyway. Both Blaine and Artie were in the High Dependency Unit. A step down from the ICU, which was a positive thing, but it still meant they were both in serious conditions. In all honesty, as Nick stepped into the Unit nursing his sleeping son in his arms, he really had no idea who to visit first. He just stood there for a moment looking around helplessly and not knowing what the hell to do. But he had to make a move. He knew if he kept standing there, he was going to burst into tears and that wouldn't do anyone any good. He told his feet to keep moving up the corridor and after looking into a couple of the rooms he passed, he finally came to Blaine, lying unmoving and unconscious on a bed in the middle of the private room... and a guy that looked familiar to Nick sitting beside him, but Nick wasn't really sure who he was.

When he stepped in, he swallowed to wet his throat. "I... uh... hi," he greeted the guy awkward. Okay, Blaine had maybe, very much in rapid passing, indicated a crush. Was this guy? Or was Blaine actually dating and hadn't spilt the beans yet? "I've just... come to visit Blaine. Are you- I... I don't think I know you?"

It seemed that although Kurt had been cleared of just about everything, hospital infection control policy stated that he had to be off duty with clear pathology results for a period of seven days before he could go back to work. This meant that he didn't have the luxury of using work as an excuse to keep his distance from Blaine, and because he didn't have the excuse, his guilt conscience meant he just couldn't stay away. He wanted to be there when Blaine woke up just to see that he was okay, and to personally confess the stupid move he had made with Blaine's father.

As a result, it turned out he ended up staying the night in the uncomfortable chair that was supposed to serve as a place visitor's could sleep as they waited, but really absolutely sucked on the comfort factor. He hadn't meant to fall asleep. Hell, he hadn't meant to stay the night, but as he woke, rubbing at his stiff neck from sleeping weird in the chair, he saw that Blaine remained the same. Unconscious, unmoving. Kurt puffed out his cheeks with a breath and then let it out in a rough sigh, letting his shoulders slump. He needed to go home and shower and change, but he just couldn't bring himself to yet. It wouldn't hurt to wait just a little longer, would it...? He just needed coffee.

He shook some coins out of his wallet into his hand and then stiffly pulled himself up out of the chair to shuffle out into the hall to the coffee machine. He hated machine coffee, but it would have to do. He rested his forehead against the side of the machine as he slotted the coins in and hit the latte button, waiting as it buzzed and with painful slowness, started to trickle his coffee into the cardboard cup. So fucking ironic that just a week ago, life had been peachy and without issue. Now this. The turn of events really was making his head spin.

I feel like I'm standing at the top of a cliff about to leap off. It's not really a fabulous sensation. Jerry Springer would have a field day with me on Baggage.

It was around six or so hours, give or take, after Andrew's text message that Kurt arrived back at the hospital. He sent through a text when he managed to find a place to park in the lot and then just sat in his car with his head resting on the steering wheel for a good long few minutes. He was tired, and the events of the past few days were catching up with him. His hands were wrapped around the steering wheel with his forehead resting against his wrist as he worked up the energy to get out of the car and go back into the hospital to check how Blaine was progressing.

He just made a really stupid error, the second in as many days. He honestly thought it was the right thing to do, but apparently not. With a shake of his head, he forced his feet to take him out of the car and back into the large, looming hospital building. Riding up in the elevator, he slumped against the wall, dropping his head back against it as he watched the lights illuminate in the floor numbers as he ascended. What the hell was he doing? Why was this all making him so crazy and reckless? He had his reckless days when he was younger, and had grown out of them long ago. Why the hell did this doctor have to make his mind malfunction? It was stupid. It couldn't happen, right?

He was dressed down in a pair of designer jeans and a long leather jacket with silver trimmings and a black fedora adorning his head. It was dressed down for him, anyway. It was getting late and beyond visiting hours for the HDU, so he made his way into the unit quietly and found Andrew waiting at the nurses station for him with the promised coffee. "How is he?" he asked, as he gratefully took the cup and put it to his lips for a long sip. He really need the caffeine buzz to hit, and sooner rather than later.
